“Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days” (Ecclesiastes 11:1).
This verse speaks to the importance of investing time and effort into actions that may not yield immediate results but will bring rewards in the future. This principle is particularly relevant when it comes to teaching and fostering communication skills in students.
Teachers play a pivotal role in shaping the atmosphere of their classrooms, especially when it comes to nurturing students’ ability to communicate effectively. Recently, I had the privilege of conducting a training session at St. Willibrord High School, working with teachers from 1st to 10th standard on mastering vocal techniques. This experience highlighted just how important it is for teachers to take the initiative in creating an environment where students feel encouraged to speak.
Speaking clearly and precisely isn’t something that comes naturally to everyone; it requires a lot of modeling and practice. Teachers need to be well-equipped and confident themselves to foster an environment where students feel safe to express their thoughts. Public speaking starts with having confidence in oneself, and this confidence grows best in a non-judgmental setting. When students are supported and encouraged, they slowly build the self-assurance needed to speak clearly and effectively.
During the session, I was thrilled to see many teachers already implementing these techniques and eager to push their efforts further. Their dedication is crucial, especially for students from rural and semi-urban communities. These teachers are not just educators; they are catalysts for community development. By empowering their students with strong communication skills, they are helping to build future leaders and change-makers.
In conclusion, the role of teachers in creating the right environment for students to speak cannot be overstated. Equipped and able faculty are essential in laying the groundwork for effective communication. I am encouraged by the teachers at St. Willibrord High School, who are committed to this cause and are making significant strides in helping their students excel. Their efforts are transforming individual lives and contributing to the growth and development of their communities.
